When you need to escape the noise and the daily grind, it may be time to escape to The Shire. Yes, I'm being serious, The Shire is calling your name. This magical place is just up the Columbia River Gorge mountainside, and you can take a cozy vacation in a Hobbit Hole, straight out of The Lord Of The Rings, right here in the great northwest!
The owner, Kristie Wolf, came up with this great idea and carved into the hillside her awesome Hobbit Hole. She has used lumber and plywood to enforce the dome shape. Upon entering through the circular front door, you will discover a charming stone fireplace to curl up and relax next to until the fire dies.
This charming, cozy little place may be the perfect place for travelers who are looking to relax in the breathtaking countryside. After exploring the mountains, you can come back to fill up the tub for a warm, bubbly soak.
You can rent this amazing Hobbit Hole on Airbnb, which accommodates two people and includes a small bedroom, a bathroom, a living area with a fire, a bathroom and of course, the iconic circular front door from JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The room will set you back around $200, which isn't bad for such a unique experience.
Animal lovers will also enjoy staying here, as Kristie’s listing reads, “the majority of your neighbors will be deer, rabbits, birds and grouse. It’s two miles up the mountain and although there are houses in the area, it gets more remote the closer you get to the Hobbit hole.”
Kristie Wolfe of Boise, ID has bought a slice of Middle Earth to the visitors of central Washington. In less than one year, she has turned into possibly the most unique getaway Orondo, Washington has seen.
“I bought the land last June or July and started building on Labor Day. I’ve been back for the last month getting all the final stuff finished,” Wolfe said. “I had spent a week with my mom driving all over Washington and Oregon, and I was actually looking for something closer to the coast. I found a couple places that just weren’t right. They didn’t have the rolling hills. Someone mentioned Chelan and I drove up here on a weekend trip and this land was awesome, so I snagged it up.”
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
The Hobbit Hole is just one of three “tiny houses” that Wolfe has built. Prior to the Hobbit Hole, Wolfe built a tropical treehouse in Hawaii, set within the rainforests of the Big Island just minutes from Volcanoes National Park.
