Get Ready For Massive King Tide Waves On The Oregon Coast This Weekend

by | Nov 6, 2021 | News

There's nothing that excites me more than a good storm on the coast, and of course magnificent king tides. As we reported last month, king tides will be happening this weekend. King tides are the highest tides of the year, and often call for high surf warnings or advisories, so keep this in mind if you venture out.

"A king tide is a non-scientific term," Meg Reed tells KGW, coastal shores specialist at the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development. "The scientific term is Perigean Spring Tide. They're naturally occurring tidal cycles that happen several times throughout the year." Even more interesting, this phenomenon occurs when the moon is at the closest point to the Earth, and the Earth is at its closest point to the sun.

This year’s king tides are expected in November and December of 2021 and January of 2022.

  • November 5 – 7, 2021
  • December 3 – 5, 2021
  • January 1 – 3, 2022
