Springfield, Oregon is abuzz with excitement as the beloved fast-food chain Chick-Fil-A gears up to set up shop in the city. This comes as a surprise to many, as the famed burger joint In-N-Out was once vying for the same spot but ultimately stepped back, giving Chick-Fil-A the green light.
The latest from KEZI suggests Springfield's city officials and Chick-Fil-A are collaborating on a blueprint for the upcoming restaurant. Senior Planner Tom Sievers mentioned that once the plans are agreed upon, it'll mark the beginning of the construction process. "After addressing our comments and conditions, they'll update the plans and submit it for a final site plan. If everything's in order, they can proceed with applying for building permits," Sievers explained to KEZI.
Famous for its seemingly endless queues, Chick-Fil-A is already prompting the city to plan for efficient customer flow. Springfield Transportation Planning Engineer Michael Liedler acknowledges the challenge of incorporating such a popular establishment into the area but remains confident in the site plan's ability to handle increased traffic.
"They've designed a site plan with multiple drive-through lanes and ample queuing storage. We'll continue to monitor it," Liedler tells KEZI. "Additionally, connections to adjoining properties and a signal for exit purposes are provided."
The pedestrian island nearby will undergo modifications to facilitate traffic into Chick-Fil-A's parking lot. Police will be on hand to oversee traffic management during the grand opening and subsequent months.
However, not everyone is on board. Some residents, like Darren Mills, worry that the already congested traffic situation will worsen. "Traffic has tripled since I moved here in '96. This area becomes highly congested between noon and 6:30. Adding a restaurant will make it a nightmare," Mills tells KEZI.
Nevertheless, eager foodies won't have to wait too long. Chick-Fil-A is expected to open its doors in Springfield within the next six to eight months.
