The Iconic Steakhouse In Oregon That Serves Absolutely Mouthwatering Steaks

Ruth’s Chris is a name synonymous with steak, and it’s been that way since for nearly 60 years. In 1965, it was no small feat for a 38-year-old single mother to run her own restaurant, but that’s exactly what Ruth Fertel did in New Orleans. The steakhouse she bought was already called “Chris’ Steak House,” and when she had to relocate 11 years later, she was also forced to change the name. Wanting to maintain a connection to the business she already built up, she simply put her name, “Ruth’s,” in front. The rest, as they say, is history, and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse is the undisputed leader in fine dining franchises. The incredibly successful restaurant chain now operates in 21 different countries and we’re lucky enough to have one right here in downtown Portland.

If you’re craving a steak and you want it to be the highest quality and perfectly cooked, this is the place to go. Yes, it’s pricey, but you’re going to get exceptional everything here from the food to drinks to atmosphere to service. Whether you’re just catching a quick bite or celebrating a birthday or anniversary, the staff here are true professionals and impressively knowledgeable about the entire food and drink menu. They can help you select the perfect wine pairing no matter what you order, and they go out of their way to ensure you have a memorable experience.

Meat will be the first thing to determine, and you can’t go wrong whether you’re in the mood for a filet mignon, ribeye, or t-bone, but that’s not the only fantastic thing on the menu. Everything here is ordered a la carte so you’re able to customize your meal however you like, and it also lets you share so you can try a little of everything.

Start the table out with the Goat Cheese & Artichoke Dip made with artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, and topped with goat cheese. For sides, try their rich Lobster Mac and Cheese made with cavatappi pasta, tender lobster, and white cheddar sauce, the Sweet Potato Casserole with a pecan crust, or Creamed Spinach (which I wouldn’t think would be anything special, but it is!). For desserts, two sure winners are the Cheesecake and Crème Brûlée made with vanilla bean custard with raw sugar crust.

I also can’t not talk about happy hour here. If you like the idea of going to a fancy steakhouse before catching a show at the Keller or Schnitz, but just can’t fit it into your budget, you’ve got to try their happy hour, offered every day but Saturday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The bar at Ruth’s Chris is a perfect spot for a pre-show drink or a casual dinner. Here you can get reasonably-priced burgers, steak sandwiches, fried shrimp, seared ahi tuna, and affordable cocktails and wine.

Because it’s right downtown parking can be an issue, so allot extra time to find a spot. If you want to splurge, they offer valet parking Wednesday through Sunday nights for $15. You should also consider reservations which can be done easily on their website, but the bar is always first come first serve.
