Back in 2019, we released our list of the 20 Best Bloody Marys in Oregon, and this amazing Sweet Home restaurant unanimously made the cut. Today we're revisiting The Point because it's so much more than incredible breakfast drinks. This place tastes like home.
The Point uses fresh ingredients, sourced locally from Oregon whenever possible. The seafood is never frozen, the steaks are hand-cut, and the outrageously juicy burgers are locally sourced from Miner Ranch. Those homemade pies and cobblers though; they're quite possibly the closest thing to heaven you’ll find this side of the Cascades.
The Point's Humble Beginnings: Keeping it Real
Originally Leonard Thornbrugh's beautiful 1936 home, The Point opened as a restaurant in 1970. For over 40 years, this cozy spot by Foster Lake has served up home-baked pies, fresh burgers, hand-cut steaks, and the freshest seafood, drawing folks back for not just the food but the warmth and welcome they feel every time.
The real heartwarming part of the story revolves around Michael Hall, just a kid in 1983 who worked mowing the grass around the restaurant to earn some extra money for school clothes. He eventually moved on and up to work in the restaurant, and by 2009, Michael and his wife Mirasol proudly became the owners of The Point. If that isn't the epitome of family, I don't know what is.
Home Cooking With a Killer View
Sitting just across Hwy. 20 from Foster Lake, you may have noticed The Point on a drive through Santiam Pass and been too focused on the journey to stop in for a bite. Big mistake.
From breakfast to dinner, this place is serving up the best of satisfying grub.
Just feast your eyes on the menu. There's absolutely something for everyone here, from seafood snobs to salad aficionados, desert delighters, breakfast lovers, and everybody in between.
Start your meal with a full pound of Manilla steamer clams, fresh, juicy, and served with garlic bread. Move on to a "Comfort Entree", like the Lemon Herb Chicken or Pork Osso Buco.
If you still have room, the dessert menu is not to be missed.
If breakfast is more to your liking, stop in before 11 am daily for a full round of incredible flavor. We are in love with the Neptune Benedict: Dungeness crab meat and two poached eggs on an english muffin, topped with creamy hollandaise sauce and bay shrimp.
Sweet items are always appreciated too, like The Point's Marionberry and Cream Cheese Stuffed Waffles...oh my goodness.
Even better? The weekly and weekend special menus, where you may find anything from Peaches & Cream French Toast or Seafood Cioppino, to Curry Beef Stew or Almond Chicken Stir Fry. Be sure to visit The Point on Facebook for all the current menu offerings.
Whether you're doing some fishing at Foster Lake or just heading through, The Point is always the perfect option to stop in and fill your belly. It may just become your new tradition.
