At the south end of Seaside on the 101, there used to be an old, deteriorating 76 Gas Station that was the first thing to greet travelers as they made their way into town. But all that changed back in 2016 when Candace and David Remer bought the property and turned it into one of the best restaurants on the coast—the fantastic Ruby’s Roadside Grill. Ruby’s still retains some classic gas-station aesthetic, but it’s now been transformed into a welcoming, family and dog-friendly eatery. The Remer's black lab, Ruby, is the restaurant's namesake and is jokingly referred to as the CEO and chairman.
There’s plenty of seating both inside and outside and on a nice sunny day, they have large, roll-up doors that let the cool sea breeze cool in. Ruby’s isn’t fast food, but it is casual and quick with warm, friendly staff members. You place your order at the front counter and then your name is called out when it’s ready, so the service is usually pretty fast (though there can be a wait on weekends!).
Ruby’s also has quite a claim to fame, asserting they have the best burgers on the planet. Can they really be that good? Well, according to countless reviewers—they are! Try the Jalapeño Bacon Burger with lettuce, tomato, bacon, sliced and grilled jalapeño, pepper jack cheese and a jalapeño cream cheese garlic spread, or the Seasider made with bacon-wrapped sweet onion slices, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and smoky sauce.
Other great menu items are the Pulled Pork Sandwich made with tender, house smoked pork on a brioche bun, with cilantro pineapple coleslaw and BBQ sauce, the Crab Cakes made with Dungeness crab, mixed peppers, red onions, seeded jalapeño peppers, celery, carrots, herbs, and topped with chipotle aioli, or the Reuben made with house-smoked corned beef on rye, sauerkraut, melted swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing.
You also can’t go wrong with Ruby’s delicious appetizers like their Flash Fried Brussels Sprouts with stone ground mustard, bacon bits, sunflower seeds and parmesan cheese, or the savory and delectable Garlic Mozzarella Fries. They also serve breakfast on the weekends and some spectacular prime rib on Friday nights that will sell out, so get there early so you don’t miss out! To drink, grab one of the local draft beers on tap including Ruby’s Good Girl Ale, or one of their thick and creamy milkshakes.
They even have a “canine cuisine” menu where you can order your pup a two-ounce hamburger patty, five-ounce chicken breast, or hot dog for only two dollars! Dogs are always welcome on the outside patio, so bring them along after a day of frolicking on the beach. Ruby’s is the perfect place to relax as you gaze out at Mill Ponds and the Coastal Range and stay warm by the huge gas fire pit. On a nice day, you can also get a few rounds of cornhole in while enjoying a burger and beer with friends.
