Dig Up Your Own 30 Million Year Old Fossils At This Oregon Park

Take a step back in time to 33 million years ago when Oregon's climate was milder and wetter than it is today. In Fossil Oregon there's a park where you can explore an ancient shallow lake bed from the Oligocene period, and take home your own fossils!

Behind Wheeler High School in Fossil Oregon there's an ancient shallow lake bed from the Oligocene period. The Wheeler High School Fossil Beds are the perfect place to spend time exploring Oregon's past with friends and family.

Most of the fossils found at these fossil beds are leaves and branches of the ancestors of the modern sycamore, alder, rose, oaks, and maples. Some people have also found salamander and small fish fossils at this site.

When you're done digging up your fossils, the site is within walking distance of the Oregon Paleo Lands Institute Center and Gallery which are worth a visit.

Those wanting to collect fossils will need to call ahead to arrange a visit at (541) 763-4303.

There is a small fee to visit and collect fossils:

  • $5 for individuals.
  • $15 for a family of four (each additional child is $3).
  • Groups of 20 people or less cost $25.

There may be some tools available to use at the dig site, but it's best to come prepared with your own digging tools and gloves. Don't forget to bring sunscreen, lots of water and something to eat.
